LaMaison sits inland, in the medieval village of Sveti Petar u Sumi, which grew up around a monastery and takes its name from Saint Peter in the forest. The light is long here, the evenings are still, and the nights are dark and quiet.
The truffle forest of Motovun is 40 minutes north, above the Mirna valley, where the white truffle is found from October into November. The hilltowns are an easy morning, Motovun on its walls, Groznjan given to artists and summer music, and Buzet the old truffle town.
This is wine and olive oil country. Istria is known for its Malvazija and Teran, and counted among the world's top olive oil regions, and both reach your table from close by, the wine poured and the oil pressed where it is grown.
When you want the sea, Rovinj is half an hour, a fishing town best in the late afternoon, and Porec a similar distance, with its sixth century basilica. A boat can wait for you at Rovinj at the hour you choose, out to the islands and quiet coves along the coast.
It is a place that reveals itself slowly, through the seasons, the produce, and the pace of the day.
